The gadget is known as a “shim” because it is relatively thin piece of hardware that resembles the shims used by carpenters or stone masons to fill a small gap in their cabinetry or stone wall. Often people take on more credit card debt during times of economic crisis, but this time around they appear to be bucking the trend and playing it smart.

But before popping the champagne corks to celebrate the New Year and a debt-free trend, researchers caution that such optimism may be premature.
