Global luxury vehicle maker Mercedes-Benz on Monday launched two variants of the 2010 M-Class. The company said it is bullish on the growth prospects this year and keen on leveraging India for global sourcing.

“We expect a good year in 2010 and are hoping to build on the momentum of 2009 when we sold 140 M class, which was double the sales compared to 2008,” Mercedes-Benz India MD and CEO Dr Wilfried G Aulbur said.

Merc’s new sports edition is priced at Rs 55 lakh and luxury edition priced at Rs 60.9 lakh.

Aulbur said the company was encouraged to launch two new variants due to good performance of its M-Class model series in india. Last year Mercedes-Benz sold its 140 units, double the amount it sold in 2008, taking the market share of its luxury SUVs to 16 epr cent, a number they are very hopeful of increasing now.

He also said the company is planning a new Benz centre in Delhi with 26 car display, a 12-car display in Hyderabad and a 16-car display in Chennai, he said apart from investing in manpower.

Mercedes-Benz is investing Rs 200 crore in revamping the network in creating new showrooms, upgradation of the existing ones and entering new cities, Aulbur said.

“We’re already present in 25 cities across India and we hav just opened in Surat, with three car display, three mechanical bay facilities. We’re now lookin at other facilities including Goa, Indore and Bhubaneshwar,” he said.

The new m class variants, along with the GL, expected to arrive later this quarter,is giving the company confidence of reaching their double digit growth this year, not just in the luxury SUV segment, but overall as well.

With strong contenders in this race though, one can be sure that there’ll be a nail-biting run-up to the finish line.
