Small business owners are skeptical about the bottom-line benefits of cloud computing, according to the Small Business Authority Market Sentiment Survey released June 28.
Nearly half of the roughly 1,000 small business owner respondents to the survey said they do not think cloud computing will reduce overall IT-related costs, while only a fifth of respondents said it would. Over a third (32 percent) said they did not know.
While fewer than half of respondents (48 percent) said their business uses or has historically used Microsoft software or operating systems, Microsoft came out on top when it came to cloud computing. Asked what service they were most likely to use if they decided to use a cloud computing product, 42 percent said they would use the Small Business Authority/Microsoft product. Apples iCloud came in second among the listed products, at 15 percent, with Amazon and VMWare rounding out the list. However, 29 percent replied “None of the above” to this question.
The survey was released on the same day Microsoft made small business technology news by officially launching its Office 365 cloud service. In a press release regarding this event, entrepreneur Elia Wallen said using Office 365 will save his small business $100,000 a year.
