“Spear phishing” is a form of phishing, which is where fraudsters send e-mail messages to trick victims into sending money or divulging sensitive personal information that can be used to commit identity theft. In the case of spear phishing, the e-mail messages are personalized to the recipient rather than part of a mass e-mail blast, which is how regular phishing crimes occur. Spear phishing often takes place following a database breach where victims’ e-mail addresses are stolen and become available to criminals.
