West Virginia is the only state to report a decrease in population. Dealths outpace births and the race is expected to continue. The once booming area used to house an abundance young couples and children, but with the decline of the steel mill the largest employer, these families are forced to relocate to survive.
The sense of community is dwindling if not gone in some areas. The aging population just does not have the energy, or in some cases, the ability to activily participate in community building activites. Gone are the days of festivals, fairs, and parades unless the younger generation steps up to the challenge.

‘Move Money’ is the Treasurer’s initiative to help tax-payer funds get directed to Massachusetts community banks, such as Century Bank. Previously this fund used to be deposited with large out-of-state banks. The funds can help to stimulate ‘growth engines’ of MSMEs. Small businesses can find the much needed finance for its expansion.

Century has joined the mission to help small businesses grow. Thirty banks have already signed to this innovative program. Treasurer Steven Grossman says, “Joining with Century Bank is another great step forward for the Small Business Banking Partnership.” The partnership will definitely bring more loans to Massachusetts banks that will later on be directed to Massachusetts small businesses.

Keeping this in view, Wells Fargo kicks off an annual Small Business Appreciation Celebration by launching a new financial information portal meant for the owners of small businesses. This is going to serve as a resource center to access multimedia content with tips and strategies on how to start, grow, expand, and manage businesses. The pace of government-backed loan modifications picked up in March, with both new trials and permanent modifications approved under the Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP) up significantly.

The Treasury Department reports that 36,400 homeowners were approved for permanent HAMP loan modifications during the month, an increase of more than 10,000 from February. It was the most permanent HAMP modifications approved in a single month since last July.   New admissions to the the HAMP program rose to 36,400, up from 29,100 in February and the most trial modifications begun since December. Borrowers qualifying for HAMP must complete a three-month trial period before they can be approved for permanent modifications. Read more…

In small business news, National Small Business Week is scheduled to take place the week of May 16, and will honor the nations top entrepreneurs in Washington, D.C., notes BusinessNewsDaily.

“This country owes a lot to the ingenuity of the small business owners,” says Brian Miller, COO and president of consulting firm The Entrepreneurs Source. “Entrepreneurs create new businesses and are primary engines for job creation and poverty reduction. They also are responsible for the commercial introduction of many new products and services, and for opening new markets.”

Other cities throughout the country, such as Charlotte, North Carolina and San Francisco, California, are hosting local small business events concurrently with the national celebration.
